The Missouri State Bar Financial Services & Insolvency Law Committee named Kutak Rock transition partner Dan Nelson the recipient of the Michael R. Roser Excellence in Bankruptcy Law award given annually to a lawyer who:

1. Manifests the highest standard of excellence in bankruptcy practice
2. Contributes distinctively to the development and appreciation of bankruptcy law
3. Has made an outstanding contribution to the field of bankruptcy practice or administration

“Dan is always a well-prepared and tough advocate who is not afraid to try a case, but he is also respectful and practical and tries to resolve issues when he can," one of his nominators wrote to the committee. "[W]hen Dan enters an appearance in a case, he will raise interesting issues and if not settled ... the matter will be well tried.” 

Dan, a member of Kutak Rock's Springfield office, has represented secured and unsecured creditors and trustees under Chapters 7, 11, 12 and 13 of the Bankruptcy Code. His experience includes civil litigation to enforce promissory notes, security agreements, deeds of trust and personal guaranties, collection of loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration, actions for repossession of personal property collateral, real estate foreclosures, loan workouts, restructuring and forbearance arrangements. Dan is a former Chapter 7 and Chapter 12 bankruptcy trustee.

“Mr. Roser set a high bar for all bankruptcy practitioners and was a shining example of the best of us in this area of practice,” Nelson recently told The Missouri Bar. “To be recognized in the same company as past recipients of this award is a truly humbling experience indeed.”

Dan will receive the award at the Midwestern Bankruptcy Institute in Kansas City on October 25.
